Fall in June Lake: Golden Aspens, Quiet Trails and Slow Mornings

An aspen meadow turning gold in the Eastern Sierra

Every year, sometime in late September, the Eastern Sierra quietly changes its mind. The hot, hazy days of summer slip away, the first real snow has not yet come over the crest, and for a few weeks the June Lake Loop belongs to the people who know to come now. Fall is the forgotten season in between. It is also the best one.

The aspens go first. They turn in late September and October, and the color walks down-canyon as the nights get colder: orange and gold against the gray granite of Carson Peak and the dark green of the pines. Fall color is not just a New England story. Up here, the leaves give back all the light the sun poured into them all summer, and they do it in front of ten-thousand-foot walls. Our June Lake Loop fall colors guide has where to stand and when, and Mono County keeps a live fall color report so you do not drive up a week early.

The slow part of the day

Fall mornings at the chalet start late on purpose. The coffee maker rumbles, the creek is loud in the cold air, and somebody is already at the breakfast bar arguing for the trail to Fern Lake while somebody else argues for doing nothing at all. Both of them are right. The first few minutes after the sun clears the peaks are the best light of the year, so the photographers go. Everybody else goes back to bed, and the quiet up here makes an extra hour of sleep feel like two at home.

With the summer crowds gone, the trails are empty. Zip your fleece to the chin and the first thing you notice is the stillness. It is the best time of year to see a marmot getting fat, a bear doing the same, or a golden eagle riding the thermals over the Loop. Keep your distance, and keep food out of your car. The bears read the same calendar you do.

When the sun drops behind the ridge, the outdoor hydrotherapy tub is waiting off the back deck. Cold air, hot water, stars coming out over Carson Peak: fall may be its best season. Whether you came for a hard hike, a slow week or time with the people you love, it all ends in the same place. Send us your October dates before somebody else does.
