Why June Mountain

June Mountain is the quiet one. It has about 2,500 vertical feet of terrain for every level, short lift lines and views across the June Lake Loop to Carson Peak. It is family first, and it is one of the best deals in California skiing for families: kids 12 and under ski free all season with a no-cost child pass. See June Mountain for current terms.

When you want bigger terrain, Mammoth Mountain is about 30 minutes south.

A ski day from the chalet

Coffee by the fire, boots on in the mud room, and two minutes to the lot. Ski until the legs give out, then come home to snow banked around the hot tub. Guests have been known to bury drinks in the snowbank before heading out and dig them up at the end of the day.

For experts, there is one more option. With a local guide, you can ski from the top of June Mountain all the way down to the chalet’s back deck. It is one of the best lift-assisted backcountry descents in the Sierra.

Amazing vacation in a beautiful cabin with everything you need! The outdoor hot tub was a perfect way to relax after a day of skiing. The great room was a cozy spot to hang with a fire and watch a movie. I definitely recommend Robert's chalet.

Winter beyond the lifts

Rent snowshoes in the village and walk out the back door toward Fern and Yost Lakes. Ice climbers head to Lee Vining Canyon. Hot Creek and the area’s natural hot springs are a short drive. Our winter page and guide to Yosemite’s east side in winter cover it all, including why Tioga Road is closed until late spring.

Driving in winter

From Southern California, US 395 is usually plowed and open; from the Bay Area, Tioga Road is closed all winter, so plan on US 50 or I-80 to US 395. Carry chains or drive a four-wheel-drive car with snow tires, because chain controls are common on 395 and the June Lake Loop during storms. Check Caltrans QuickMap before you go. At the chalet, park well away from the house: the roof sheds snow.

After skiing

Most nights you will cook, with a six-burner stove and an eleven-and-a-half-foot table waiting. When you would rather not, La Parrilla, just outside June Lake Brewing in the village, serves the best Mexican food in the Eastern Sierra, and the reborn Tiger Bar is a few minutes away. See where to eat.

Who it suits

Families with young skiers, who ski free here through age 12. Groups of friends who want one house, one fire and one hot tub instead of three hotel rooms. Experienced skiers who split days between June’s quiet runs and Mammoth’s big terrain. See group lodging near Yosemite for how eight people fit.
