Where to stay in June Lake

June Lake lodging comes in three kinds. Small resorts and motels near the lakes and in the village rent rooms and simple cabins, and suit couples or anglers who are out on the water all day. Condos near the June Mountain ski area put skiers close to the lifts. Private homes around the June Lake Loop give families and groups a full kitchen, separate bedrooms and a place to gather at night.

For a group that wants to be together under one roof, a whole home is the way to go. That is what the Yosemite Gateway Chalet is.

Why stay at the Yosemite Gateway Chalet

The outdoor hydrotherapy tub below the chalet's log walls
  • The whole house is yours. About 4,000 square feet, rented to one party of up to eight.
  • Three private suites, each with its own bath, including a master with a two-person jacuzzi and a room with a ruby-red claw-foot tub.
  • An outdoor hydrotherapy tub under Carson Peak, open all year.
  • A Grand Room with 21-foot ceilings, an open fire and an oak bar, and a remodeled gourmet kitchen.
  • Five paddleboards in the garage for Silver Lake and Rush Creek.
  • Trails from the back door: the Fern and Yost Lakes trail is about a mile down-canyon.
  • One mile to June Mountain, where kids 12 and under ski free.
  • Yosemite within reach. 27 miles to the Tioga Pass entrance and 45 minutes to Tuolumne Meadows when Tioga Road is open.

The chalet was just what we expected and hoped for to facilitate a few days on June Mtn. Great location. The ambiance was cozy and inviting. Plenty of space and great for just hanging out after a long day on the slopes. We plan to stay here again.

June Lake lodging by season

Winter, December to April. June Mountain is a mile from the chalet and Mammoth Mountain is thirty minutes south. Tioga Road is closed, so Yosemite’s east side is quiet and snowbound. Book the holidays early.

Spring. Corn snow, the trout opener in late April, and the first long days. Tioga Road usually opens in late May or June, and the high country comes back.

Summer. The busiest season. Lake days on Gull, June, Silver and Grant Lakes, hikes from the door, and day trips over Tioga Pass to Tuolumne Meadows.

Fall. The secret. The aspens of the June Lake Loop turn gold in October, the crowds thin out, and the light is the best of the year. See our fall colors guide.

June Lake and Yosemite

June Lake sits on the east side of the Sierra, 27 miles from Yosemite’s Tioga Pass entrance. When Tioga Road is open, it is one of the best bases for Tuolumne Meadows and the high country, with far more room than the park’s own lodging. Yosemite Valley is a long day, about two to two and a half hours each way. Our guide to lodging near Yosemite’s east entrance compares June Lake with Lee Vining and Mammoth Lakes.

Getting here

June Lake is just off US 395, about 20 miles north of Mammoth Lakes and five hours from Los Angeles. See directions and drive times, or our full June Lake guide.

Questions

Is June Lake a good base for visiting Yosemite?

Yes, from late May or June to about November, when Tioga Road is open. June Lake is 27 miles from the Tioga Pass entrance and about 45 minutes from Tuolumne Meadows. In winter Tioga Road closes and there is no east entrance, so June Lake becomes a ski and snow destination instead.

When should I book lodging in June Lake?

As early as you can for the winter holidays, Presidents’ Day, the Fourth of July and October fall color weekends. Those dates fill months ahead. Midweek in spring and early summer is the easiest time to find space.

What does a stay at the Yosemite Gateway Chalet cost?

Nightly rates run from $295 to $995, with the top of the range at the Christmas peak. Every stay adds $59 a night for a seventh and eighth guest, a flat $295 cleaning fee and Mono County’s 15% lodging tax, and nothing else. Check open dates on our availability calendar, or see live prices on VRBO or Airbnb.
